Photo: Shutterstock Air Canada has announced plans to launch scheduled flights to Lagos, Nigeria, in 2027, following the expansion of the Air Transport Agreement between Canada and Nigeria. The airline will now begin the process of securing the necessary regulatory approvals before introducing the new route.
The announcement comes after the Government of Canada unveiled an updated bilateral aviation agreement designed to increase air connectivity between the two countries. The expanded agreement is expected to boost tourism, trade, and business travel while providing greater travel options for the large Nigerian community living in Canada.

The Canadian government described the agreement as an important step in strengthening economic and people-to-people ties.
Minister of Transport Steven MacKinnon said the expanded agreement will create new opportunities for Canadian airlines while giving travelers more choice.
"By expanding our air transport agreements, we are creating new opportunities for Canadian airlines and giving travelers more choice. The newly expanded Canada-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement will strengthen our economic ties, support tourism and trade, and make it easier for people and businesses in both countries to connect," he said.
Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu highlighted the significance of establishing a direct connection between Canada and one of Africa's largest economies.
"This expanded agreement creates a direct link between Canada and Nigeria. It means more choice for travelers, stronger ties between our people, and new opportunities for businesses to expand trade in both directions," Sidhu said.
He also noted that many Canadians of Nigerian descent have long called for direct air services between the two countries, adding that improved connectivity will bring families, communities, and business partners closer together while giving Canadian exporters easier access to Nigeria's growing market.
Air Canada has not yet announced the flight schedule, frequency, or aircraft that will operate the new route. The airline said those details will be released once it receives the required government approvals and completes the regulatory process to begin commercial operations in Nigeria.
If approved, the Lagos service will mark Air Canada's first scheduled route to Nigeria, further expanding the carrier's international network across Africa.
