Earthquake. Photo: SHUTTERSTOCK A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 occurred this morning (Saturday, August 15) in the Flores region in eastern Indonesia, according to BMK, Indonesia's Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency.
According to the latest data, the earthquake occurred at 04:58:23 local time, at a depth of 15 kilometers. The epicenter was located at sea, about 30 kilometers northeast of Mbay in Nagekeo district, East Nusa Tenggara province.
Reports of deaths and injuries followed the earthquake, along with heavy damage to buildings in the area. Authorities continue to scan and collect data from the area.
Following the earthquake, BMKG issued a tsunami warning for areas in East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and West Nusa Tenggara. Later, tsunami waves were reported from several stations along the coast.
Among other things, a wave with a height of 0.94 meters was measured in Maurula-Anda, alongside lower waves in Sikka, Labuan Bajo, and eastern Flores.
At 07:31:30 local time, BMKG announced that the tsunami warning had ended.
The data may be updated as the Indonesian authorities continue to monitor the situation.
