Italy Faces Huge Wave of Strikes in September, With Flights, Trains, and Buses Affected

Heading to Italy in September? Be sure to prepare for yet another busy month of planned transport strikes, with disruptions scheduled to affect trains, local buses, airport services and air transport in several parts of the country.

September 4: Genoa Public Transport

The CUB Transporti strike, involving employees of AMT Genoa, is expected to last eight hours, although the specific operating times are listed as various modalities. The action is classified as territorial and could affect local public transport services in Genoa.

September 5: Venice Area Buses

Employees of ATVO in the Venice area are scheduled to strike for four hours, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The action could affect local public transport.

September 7–8: Major Railway Disruption

One of the most important periods for rail travelers comes on September 7 and 8, when several railway strikes overlap.

Employees of Trenitalia's Customer Operations division in Piemonte are scheduled to strike for 24 hours, from 9:18 p.m. on September 7 until 9:17 p.m. on September 8.

Trenitalia mobile staff in Trentino-Alto Adige are also scheduled to strike on September 7 from 9:01 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At the national level, several actions are scheduled to affect railway companies, including strikes involving railway workers and FSI locomotive and onboard staff running from 9:18 p.m. on September 7 until 9:17 p.m. on September 8.

September 10: Buses in Trento and Foggia

Local public transport workers in Trento are scheduled to strike for four hours on September 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In Foggia, ATAF employees are scheduled for strikes covering 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

September 13–15: Airport and Local Transport Strikes

Security staff at Rome's Fiumicino and Ciampino airports are scheduled to strike for 24 hours, from midnight to midnight. At the same time, staff at Toscana Aeroporti, GH Toscana and Consulta operating at Pisa and Florence airports are scheduled for a four-hour strike from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Local transport disruptions continue on September 14, when Arriva Italia employees in Bergamo are scheduled to strike from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

In Naples, ANM metropolitan rail staff are scheduled to strike from 12:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. on September 15.

Several strikes are also listed for Autolinee Toscane services in Florence, Prato, Pisa and surrounding areas on the same day. Some are scheduled to last 24 hours, while the Pisa urban and extra-urban service action is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

ATVO employees in Venice are also scheduled for a 24-hour strike on September 15.

In Ravenna, Start Romagna workers are scheduled to strike from 8:30 a.m. to noon, including a separate action involving ferry department staff during the same period.

September 18–22: Local and Regional Disruption

On September 18, staff at Autolinee Toscane's Forte di Firenze urban area are scheduled for a 24-hour strike.

Rail passengers in Bologna and surrounding areas could face disruption on September 21. RFI operational and administrative staff are scheduled to strike from 9:01 a.m. to 5 p.m., while Trenitalia Customer Operations staff covering Bologna, Reggio Emilia Storica, AV Mediopadana and Rimini are scheduled for an eight-hour strike during the same period.

On September 22, Busitalia Sita Nord employees in Umbria are scheduled to strike for 24 hours.

September 26: Nationwide Multisector Strike

The biggest date for travelers is September 26. A nationwide multisector strike announced by CSLE could affect several forms of transport. The action is listed as lasting up to 24 hours in the air, railway and maritime sectors, while local public transport is scheduled to be affected from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Because the action is national and covers several transport categories, travelers moving around Italy on September 26 should be prepared for potential disruption across multiple parts of their journey.

Air Campania employees in Naples are also scheduled to strike for four hours on September 28, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Finally, ENAV personnel are scheduled for a four-hour nationwide air transport strike on September 30, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
