A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 was recorded in Peru, according to updated data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the data, the epicenter was about 31 km northwest of Aniso, Peru, at a depth of about 99 km below the surface.

The earthquake occurred yesterday (Thursday, August 20, 2026), at 6:00 PM local time. The event data was later updated by the USGS

The USGS initially assessed the event as posing a relatively low risk of casualties and significant damage, despite the earthquake's high magnitude. The agency's data also does not indicate a tsunami threat following the event.

According to official updates, no announcement was made about airport closures, flight suspensions, or significant disruption to the transportation network following the earthquake, and there is no official indication of damage to major tourist sites.
