According to the official forecast, the capital Athens is expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius during the day today and tomorrow (August 24-25). Greek forecasters also predict that temperatures could cross the 40-degree mark at times.
As with previous heat waves in Israel this year, one of the most difficult characteristics of the heat wave is its length. Even after some moderation in temperatures, 34 to 36 degrees are expected in Athens later this week and into the end.
The extreme weather is expected to lead to the closure of tourist sites in Athens, such as the Acropolis and Lycabettus (Wolves' Hill) during the intense heat.
The heat wave is also expected to be particularly intense in other parts of the country. In Thessaloniki, temperatures are expected to reach 34 degrees in the next two days, but on the Greek islands the situation is more bearable with temperatures reaching up to 32 degrees in Crete, and between 30 and 31 degrees in Santorini and Mykonos. In Rhodes, 33 degrees will be measured today and 32 degrees tomorrow.
