Heat wave. Photo: Shutterstock A particularly severe heat wave will continue to hit Greece into the weekend. In recent days, extremely high temperatures have been recorded across the country. Although the maximum temperatures themselves are not considered unusually extreme, the combination of prolonged heat and high humidity makes the conditions particularly difficult.
According to the official weather authority, in areas of western Greece, the perceived temperatures have reached 46-48 degrees Celsius in recent days. Yesterday (Thursday, August 27), a record perceived temperature of 49.9 degrees was recorded in the city of Aitoliko in western Greece.
This weekend, temperatures are expected to reach 35 degrees in Athens and Rhodes, 32 degrees in Crete, and more tolerable temperatures on the Greek islands, around 30 degrees.
The heavy feeling continues into the night, with temperatures remaining high in many areas, especially in urban centers. Heat stored in buildings and roads during the day makes it difficult for temperatures to drop, leaving residents without nighttime relief.
As we reported earlier this week, experts note that the duration of the heat, not just the maximum temperature, makes the current period challenging. Prolonged exposure to heat and humidity may increase the feeling of strain on the body, especially among the elderly, children, and people who spend extended periods outside air-conditioned buildings.
