Severe thunderstorms repeatedly pass over Switzerland and the Zurich area, affecting airport operations. Lightning strikes are recorded in the area near the airport, and in such situations, work on the apron is suspended for safety reasons.
During the Handling Stop, ground crews are required to leave the apron and move away from aircraft and other metal structures. As a result, operations such as loading and unloading cargo, refueling, and preparing aircraft for the next flight cannot be performed.
Ground work interruptions, even when relatively short, can create delays that accumulate throughout the day. At the same time, weather conditions in the field area sometimes significantly limit the number of takeoffs and landings that can be performed.
SWISS said the company's teams are working to maintain stable operations as much as possible, help passengers reach connecting flights, and minimize the impact of disruptions.
Other airports in Switzerland also recorded delays in takeoffs. At Geneva Airport, some flights were delayed by about an hour and a half and in Basel by about an hour. According to Flightradar24 data, no cancellations were recorded for departing flights.
