Photo: Shutterstock The U.S. National Park Service is asking the public for help locating more than 20 people who may be missing or have not yet been contacted after significant flash flooding on August 29 in the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas of the Grand Canyon.
Grand Canyon National Park crews, in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, are continuing evacuation and response operations and working to locate everyone who was in the affected area.
The National Park Service is urging anyone who knows of hikers or backpackers who were in the Bright Angel Creek corridor area on August 29, as well as anyone who had reservations at campgrounds in the affected area, to contact the National Park Service's Investigations Unit.
The request relates, among other things, to hikers who hiked along the North Kaibab Trail, between the Phantom Ranch trailhead, guests staying at the Bright Angel Campground, and those who hiked or stayed in the area known as "the Box," north of Phantom Ranch.
Anyone with information about a person who may have traveled or stayed in the area is asked to contact the National Park Service's Investigative Authority Information Line at 888-653-0009.
When offering information, the public is asked to provide as much identifying information as possible about the person, including name, approximate location, trip plans, number of participants in the group, description of clothing or backpack, and the last date they were known to be in the area. Information can also be provided anonymously.
