Electric buses at Sydney Airport. Photo: SYD - Sydney Airport Sydney Airport is taking another step towards its goal of zero emissions by 2030 with the launch of a new fleet of 50 electric buses. The buses will gradually replace the diesel-powered vehicles used to transport passengers and workers around the airport, both on the airside and on the landside.
The new fleet includes 25 dedicated buses for operation on the airport aprons and 25 Citirider electric shuttle buses, supplied by Australian vehicle manufacturer BCI.
Electric buses at Sydney Airport. Photo: SYD - Sydney AirportThe airport emphasizes that the buses will run on 100% renewable energy, as part of its power purchase agreement. In addition to the environmental benefit, the buses are expected to be quieter and more comfortable for passengers.
The upgrade also includes technology to improve the passenger experience: digital information screens on buses and at stations will provide real-time wait times and estimated arrival times at the destination.
One of the most prominent elements of the project is the exterior design of the buses, for which a painting by Darwal artist Shane Youngberry was commissioned. The work, called Gamay, incorporates figures of animals that are significant in local culture, including a manatee and fish, and tells a story of movement, connection, and community.
The airport notes that the buses will not only be a greener means of transportation, but also a way to introduce the millions of visitors coming to Sydney to the local indigenous culture as soon as they land in Australia.
