Photo: Shutterstock Severe weather is expected to hit Greece during the day, with the National Meteorological Service of Greece (EMY) issuing an updated warning of heavy rainfall, localized thunderstorms, high frequency of lightning and possible hail in the northwestern Aegean region. The warning is valid from Tuesday, September 22, 2026, until the early hours of Wednesday, September 23.
According to the official announcement, heavy showers and occasional thunderstorms are expected in Thessaly today, mainly in the Magnesia region and in the maritime and coastal areas, in the Sporades Islands and in the central and northern parts of the island of Evia. Showers and thunderstorms are expected in Chalkidiki until the early afternoon.
Even during the night and early morning hours of Wednesday, the system is expected to continue to affect Thessaly, the Sporades, and Evia, mainly in the center and north of the island.
The Ministry of Climate Protection and Civil Protection in Greece notes that local authorities and state services have been updated and are on heightened alert for the effects of the weather.
The public is asked to avoid crossing streams and flowing water, both during the rain and for several hours afterwards, and to avoid marine and coastal activities during storms due to the risk of lightning.
Authorities also recommend staying away from large trees, signs, or objects that may break off and fly, and in the event of hail, entering a building or vehicle and remaining in a protected location until the storm passes. Drivers are asked not to enter flooded roads.
For travelers and tourists staying in the areas mentioned in the warning, the recommendation is to follow the ongoing updates of the Greek Meteorological Service and local authorities, especially regarding activities on beaches, in the sea, and in open areas.
