Authorities in Spain have sent an emergency alert to mobile phones across parts of the Valencia region as intense rainfall and storms affect Castellón and Valencia.

Highest Level of Alert

The Generalitat Valenciana, through its Emergency Coordination Centre, issued an Es-Alert to residents in the northern inland and coastal areas of Castellón and along the coast of Valencia. The warning followed the activation of the highest, red alert level for heavy rain.

The emergency message urged people to avoid travel and stay away from riverbeds, ravines and other areas that could quickly become dangerous if water levels rise. Residents were also told to respect road closures and move to higher floors if flooding occurs.

Spain's State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, is forecasting very heavy showers and thunderstorms along the Castellón and Valencia coasts. Its latest marine forecast warned of particularly intense rainfall from Thursday afternoon, with conditions potentially becoming hazardous for people in coastal areas.

The emergency warning is particularly relevant for people traveling through the region, where heavy rainfall can quickly affect roads and local transport. Visitors and residents are being advised to check the latest official weather and emergency information before setting out.

Alert Wrongfully Reached Different Region

The alert may also have reached some mobile phones in Catalonia's Terres de l'Ebre area, even though the warning was issued for the Valencia region.

Civil Protection explained that some telephone antennas provide coverage across both territories, meaning phones connected to those antennas may receive the Es-Alert.
