Spain’s weather agency has issued a red alert for exceptionally heavy rainfall in the pre-coastal area of Barcelona, warning that up to 90 millimeters of rain could fall in just one hour.

The alert from the Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, is in effect on Monday, October 5, from 7 a.m. to 9:59 a.m. The warning covers the pre-coastal area of Barcelona and has been classified as an “extraordinary danger” level alert.

AEMET said there is a 40% to 70% probability of the extreme rainfall. The agency is particularly warning of a very localized and stationary storm in the area of Granollers, which could produce the highest rainfall totals.

The forecast calls for up to 90 millimeters of accumulated rain in one hour. Such intense rainfall can quickly lead to flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and places where drainage systems cannot handle the volume of water.

The warning is focused on the pre-coastal area rather than Barcelona as a whole. However, the possibility of intense storms could affect local travel and road conditions in the areas covered by the alert.

AEMET's latest warning, published Monday morning, also includes thunderstorms as part of the weather situation affecting parts of Spain.

The agency continues to update its warnings as conditions develop. Residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised to monitor the latest forecasts and follow instructions from local authorities, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.

The red alert comes as Catalonia has already been dealing with significant weather-related disruption in recent days, making the latest warning particularly relevant for people traveling through or staying in the Barcelona area.
