During the peak tourist season in Athens, the city center is expected to suffer significant traffic disruptions due to student protests tomorrow. The events will begin this evening (Tuesday, October 20, 2026), at 6:00 PM , with the setting up of a tent and performance complex in Syntagma Square.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, the main protest is expected to begin at 12:00 noon in the Panepistimio area, also in the city center. From there, the demonstrators will march towards the Greek Parliament, through Omonia Square and to Syntagma Square, opposite the Parliament.

For tourists currently in Athens, it is recommended to avoid and stay away from central Athens starting this morning. Public transportation is expected to suffer extensive disruptions, including the temporary closure of metro stations during the demonstration.

Currently, although this is a political and academic protest organized by students, teachers, and public servants, the demonstration is expected to take place on a planned route and with a significant police presence.

However, in light of recent events in France and Italy, there is concern about disturbances and violent protests. In addition, there is concern that anti-Israeli, pro-Palestinian elements will join the demonstrations, as happened in previous demonstrations that were not at all related to Israel, such as the demonstration against the investigation into the Tempe train disaster in 2023.

According to several publications on social media and Greek news sites, additional demonstrations are expected to take place in other locations in Greece, such as Chania and Rethymno in Crete.
