The Philippines is bracing for the arrival of one of the region's most powerful storms in recent memory. Super Typhoon Rosal, known internationally as Champi, continues to approach the country's northern islands, with authorities issuing severe warnings of strong winds, huge waves, heavy rains and dangers to maritime transport.

According to an official update published today (Wednesday, October 21, 2026) by the Philippine Atmospheric and Geophysical Service (PAGASA), sustained winds at the storm's center are reaching 215 km/h, with gusts up to 265 km/h.

The storm center is about 845 kilometers east of northern Luzon Island and moving west-northwest at 25 kilometers per hour.

According to the forecast, the typhoon is expected to arrive closest to the northern islands of the Philippines between Thursday and Friday afternoon.

Waves 9 Meters High: Severe Warning for Vessels

One of the most concerning figures in the new update concerns the expected wave heights in the area. PAGASA warns of waves of up to nine meters high along the northern and eastern coasts of the Batanes Islands and the eastern coasts of the Baboyan Islands.

Waves of up to eight meters are expected along the coasts of Cagayan province, and in other areas in the north of the country, waves of five to seven meters are expected.

Authorities emphasize that the dangerous sea conditions are unsuitable for navigation, even for large vessels, and urge vessels to remain in ports. Vessels already at sea are urged to find shelter as soon as possible.

The warnings raise concerns about disruptions to maritime transportation, including ferry services and shipping lines connecting the various islands in the country.

Fear of Flight Disruptions

In parallel with the worsening sea conditions, authorities raised the wind warning level in the Batanes Islands to Level 2. The warning means preparing for winds of 62 to 88 km/h in the island areas during the next 24 hours, along with the possibility of damage to structures and infrastructure exposed to the winds.

In other areas, including Cagayan, Baboyan Islands, parts of Isabela, Ilocos Norte and Apayao, a Level 1 warning remains in effect. The storm is also expected to affect areas further away from its center, with strong wind gusts and rains that could cause flooding and landslides.

The strengthening of the storm and its progress towards the northern Philippines raises concerns about disruptions to air and sea traffic, especially in the northern island regions.

There has been no official confirmation of widespread closures of major airports in the country or widespread flight cancellations due to the storm at this time. However, authorities are warning air and sea travelers against taking unnecessary risks, and recommend following official announcements and updates from transportation operators.

Travelers planning to travel to the Batanes Islands, the Cagayan region, or other destinations in the northern Philippines are advised to check the flight or cruise status directly with the operator before departure.

The Next 24 Hours Are Critical, but Forecast Indicates a Weakening

According to the latest PAGASA forecast, the super typhoon is currently at its peak strength, but is expected to begin weakening later today. On Thursday, it may downgrade to typhoon status, but even then, hazardous weather conditions are expected in exposed areas.

The storm is expected to gradually shift north, then northeast, and exit the Philippine Meteorological Agency's area of responsibility Friday evening or early Saturday morning.

Authorities continue to monitor its path and emphasize that even a small change in the direction of traffic could affect the areas that will be affected
