Significant disruptions to aviation in Asia following Typhoon Champi, which is advancing in the western Pacific region and affecting airline operations in Taiwan and Japan.
Today (Thursday, October 22, 2026), cancellations of 83 domestic flights on two airlines in Taiwan went into effect due to weather conditions and fears of worsening conditions.
According to official announcements from UNI Air and Mandarin Airlines, the cancellations mainly affect routes connecting Taiwan's main island with the islands of Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, which are used by residents and tourists.
UNI Air announced the cancellation of 41 domestic flights, including 32 flights on routes between Taiwan's central island and Penghu, four flights between Taichung and the Matsu Islands, and five flights between Taichung and Kinmen.
The company said it will cancel flights from the central island to Penghu from 10:00 a.m., while restrictions on routes departing from Taichung will begin at 11:30 a.m. local time.
At the same time, Mandarin Airlines announced the cancellation of 42 flights on routes connecting Taipei Songshan, Taichung and Kaohsiung with Penghu and Kinmen.
Both companies said they will continue to monitor developments and may make further changes to flight schedules depending on weather conditions.
The typhoon's impact is not limited to domestic flights in Taiwan. EVA Air has warned passengers that some flights between Taiwan and Japan may be affected in the coming days as the storm progresses.
The company recommends that passengers check their flight status before leaving for the airport and follow updates on the official website and the reservation system.
In addition, EVA Air and UNI Air have announced special arrangements for rebooking and refunds for passengers who meet the specified conditions.
The cancellations mainly affect passengers planning to travel to or from Taiwan's outlying islands. For some passengers, domestic flights are a key means of transportation, and the disruption could mean rescheduling or postponing vacations.
UNI Air allows passengers whose flights have been canceled to submit refund requests without cancellation fees, in accordance with the terms of purchase. Passengers who purchased tickets through travel agencies are required to contact the entity through which the reservation was made.
Mandarin Airlines has also issued refund guidelines for passengers whose flights were canceled.
The companies continue to update flight schedules according to the development of the typhoon, and the extent of disruptions may change over the next 24 hours.
