The new Western Sydney (Nancy-Bird Walton) International Airport in Australia has unveiled the accessibility and inclusion facilities that will be offered to passengers, as part of a planning concept that seeks to make the airport transit experience more comfortable, independent and accessible for a wide range of travelers

The new terminal features dedicated sensory rooms for passengers dealing with anxiety or sensory overload, featuring changing lighting, soothing music and relaxation chairs. The areas are designed to allow passengers to relax and continue their journey in an environment tailored to their needs.

In addition, quiet prayer rooms have been set up for members of different religions, along with rooms for ceremonial bathing. Passengers with hearing aids or implants will be able to use Hearing Loop technology, which allows them to hear announcements through compatible hearing equipment.

Families with children also receive dedicated support, with rooms that include changing stations, sinks, nursing chairs and additional facilities for caring for babies. For passengers with complex disabilities, accessible restrooms have been installed with space and equipment that allow for assistance from a caregiver or companion.

In addition, the airport offers designated animal rooms for passengers arriving with recognized assistance animals, including artificial grass areas, water bowls and hygiene measures. Accessible spaces have also been designated in the passenger drop-off and pick-up areas near the terminal, and a lift has been installed at each boarding gate to assist in transporting wheelchairs onto the aircraft.

According to the airport's CEO, Simon Hickey, accessibility was incorporated into the design as an integral part of the passenger experience. The strategy was formulated in consultation with organizations dealing with accessibility and the rights of people with disabilities.
