Western Sydney's new airport, Western Sydney International Airport, continues to move closer to its official opening, with the launch of first-ticket sales for domestic flights by Jetstar Airways and Qantas.
The first commercial flight from the new airport is expected to take off on October 25, 2026 at 11:00 am, with a Jetstar Airbus A320. The airline will also operate up to 14 weekly flights to Melbourne, four weekly flights to the Gold Coast and three weekly flights to Brisbane.
From March 28, 2027, Qantas will also join operations at the airport, with four weekly flights to Brisbane and four more to Melbourne. The flights will be operated using QantasLink Embraer E190 aircraft, which have approximately 95 seats, including up to ten in business class.
In addition to passenger operations, the new airport will begin operating a 24-hour air cargo terminal on July 26, 2026. The first Qantas cargo flight is expected to take off the following day. According to the company, more than 850 tonnes of cargo will pass through the terminal each week, as it prepares for increased demand for e-commerce and express deliveries.
Australian Transport Minister Catherine King referred to the opening of the airport as a "historic moment for Western Sydney."
