British Airways is preparing for the winter 2026 season with an expansion of its international flight network, including four new routes, the addition of additional aircraft, and increased frequencies to 11 popular long-haul destinations.

At the same time, the company is also expanding its operations in Europe, with additional flights to major cities and destinations associated with winter holidays and Christmas markets.

From Sri Lanka to Australia: The New Destinations

One of the main innovations in the winter schedule is the new route between London Gatwick and Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The inaugural flight departed on October 23, landing in Colombo the following day, and the route will operate three times a week throughout the winter season.

The destination offers a combination of tropical beaches, nature, wildlife, local culture and culinary delights. Flights will include three service classes: Economy, Premium Economy and Business. Return flight prices start at £524, including taxes, fees and carrier charges.

The airline is expected to launch another new route to Melbourne, Australia, via Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on January 9, 2027. This will be British Airways' second route to Australia, and is timed to coincide with two major international sporting events taking place in the city: the Australian Open tennis championship and the Melbourne Grand Prix.

Beyond sporting events, Melbourne is a prominent destination thanks to its arts and culture scene, restaurants and cafes, and its role as a starting point for trips along the Great Ocean Road, the region's national parks, and the wine regions of South Australia.

Flights to Melbourne will offer four classes of service, including first class. Return fares will start at £1,110, including taxes, fees and carrier charges.

More Flights to Winter and Holiday Destinations

Alongside the launch of the new routes, British Airways is increasing its flight offering to several long-haul destinations, including Cape Town in South Africa, Tokyo in Japan, Bridgetown in Barbados, Kingston in Jamaica and San Jose in Costa Rica.

The company is also adding flights to popular destinations in Europe. The company will increase flight frequency to Rome and Florence in Italy, Gothenburg in Sweden, and Jersey in the Channel Islands.

Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands, will be operated from London Heathrow Airport, with two weekly flights from mid-December to April. At the same time, Palermo, Sicily, will become a year-round route, while flights to Thessaloniki, Greece, will also be extended to November and March.

The company will also significantly increase flights to Cairo, adding seven weekly flights and bringing operations to three flights per day.

Ski Holidays and Christmas Markets

Ahead of the winter season, British Airways is expanding its operations to destinations associated with ski holidays and Christmas markets.

Geneva, Switzerland, has up to 110 weekly flights scheduled during the peak ski season, with departures from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City airports. The scale of the operation is designed to provide a variety of arrival options for those planning a ski holiday in the Alps.

Christmas market fans will also benefit from additional flights. During December, the company will operate up to five weekly flights from Heathrow to Cologne, Germany, and four weekly flights to Nuremberg.

Innsbruck in Austria, which has seven Christmas markets, will have 16 weekly flights from Gatwick and two weekly flights from London City Airport.

Following the Northern Lights: A New Line to Lapland

British Airways is also expanding its Arctic services. From December 4 to January 4, BA subsidiary Euroflyer will operate two weekly flights from Gatwick to Rovaniemi in Finland, home to Santa Claus Village.

The new route joins existing service to Ivalo, Finland, and daily flights to Tromsø, Norway. The expansion of operations allows passengers to plan winter holidays in Lapland, visit Christmas attractions and go in search of the Northern Lights.
