A Wizz Air flight from London to Sofia was diverted due to a bomb threat. The plane requested permission to land at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport.

According to a statement issued by Hungarian Defense Minister Ruszin-Szendi Romulus, a Hungarian Air Force Gripen fighter jet was scrambled within minutes of NATO declaring an ALPHA alert, and escorted the passenger plane until it landed in Budapest.

The fighter jet then returned to its base in Kecskemét, and further handling of the incident was transferred to the police.

Ruszin-Szendi noted in his publication that the Hungarian air defense system has once again proven its ability to respond quickly to unusual events and act to protect the country's airspace.
