Riots in Tanzania. A number of violent riots broke out in Tanzania after the controversial elections held on October 29, 2025, which President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to win, amid the disqualification of leading opposition candidates.

This prompted the authorities to impose a nationwide curfew, followed by severe disruptions to internet access and media.

The U.S. Embassy in Tanzania has announced the curfew start time for Dar es Salaam as 18:00, with reports of "ongoing demonstrations in multiple locations".

The embassy advised U.S. Government personnel to seek shelter "in place at their residences" and announced operations on October 30 would be limited to "emergency consular services only."

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid demonstrations.
  • Avoid crowds.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
