Long Thanh International Airport, currently under construction in southern Vietnam thanks to an investment of more than $12.7 billion, is expected to transform the country's aviation and tourism landscape and become one of Southeast Asia's leading airports.

Upon completion of phase one at the end of the year, the airport should be able to accommodate up to 25 million passengers a year, significantly easing congestion at the existing Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

Long Thanh, located in Dong Nai province, will cover 5,000 hectares and feature a state-of-the-art passenger terminal, a 4,000-meter runway, and advanced baggage handling. The airport's modern design includes advanced air traffic control systems and a precision landing system (ILS/DME), enabling operations even in difficult weather conditions.

The project, built in three phases, is part of a broader Vietnamese government effort to turn the country into a regional hub for international flights and to develop tourism in the south, including areas in the Mekong Delta and neighboring provinces.

With its expected opening in the first half of 2026, Long Thanh is expected to reshape the dynamics of air transport in Vietnam and provide more direct, convenient access for foreign tourists and investors.

Yesterday, (December 15, 2025), the project marked an important milestone, with the first technical test flight landing on the new runway. A Boeing 787-9 (Dreamliner) aircraft of Vietnam Airlines took off from Tan Son Nhat Airport at 15:34, and landed in Long Thanh after a short flight. During the test, various scenarios were conducted to evaluate the airport's systems, including parking procedures, ground handling, and coordination between fields. The flight, which included only crew members and technicians, was successful, and the aircraft returned to its departure point after the tests were completed.

This Friday, three more flights from Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airways are expected to land at the new airport, as part of preparations for the official opening early next year. The local aviation authority has asked the companies to ensure the planes and crews are fully ready for the airport's imminent operations.
