Winter is finally coming to New York. The first major snowfall of the winter is expected today (Tuesday, December 23, 2025), with another significant event expected after Christmas.

New York authorities have issued a "blue" weather warning, in effect from late last night through this afternoon, local time, for large areas of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

The forecast calls for the first snowfall of the season and rain in other parts of the East Coast. Temperatures in the New York area are expected to drop to -5 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight, while Connecticut residents can brace themselves for as low as -9 degrees Celsius (15.8 degrees Fahrenheit).

Fear of Flight Delays and Cancellations

This week's snow events could cause delays and flight cancellations on some of the busiest days of the year, when a total of about 44 million passengers are expected at US airports.

JFK Airport has issued a flight schedule warning and recommends checking with your airline to see if your flight is on time. Transportation delays are also expected due to road closures caused by snow accumulation.

Later this week, as mentioned, the snowstorm is expected to continue in New York, especially on the night between Friday and Saturday, when it could affect wider areas.

Despite all the operational difficulties surrounding the cold weather, Americans hoping for a "White Christmas" might just see their wish come true this year, and in a big way.
