Can't Beat the Weather: Wintry Conditions Limit Air Traffic and Cut Trains at This European Airport

Snow and icy conditions are limiting flights at Schiphol Airport, causing delays and cancellations. Train traffic across the Netherlands is also suspended. "Our snow crews are working around the clock. If your flight has been cancelled, please do not come to the airport."

Persistent winter weather and an Arctic cold wave are creating a cascading effect across several European airports and railways, causing flight disruptions, delays, and train cancellations. As reported last night, the United Kingdom is already experiencing heavy snow, sleet, and ice, with yellow and amber warnings in place until January 6 and January 9, respectively.

This morning, Schipol Airport, which recently announced a massive €10 billion upgrade plan with a deadline set for 2035, has announced weather-related disruptions may limit air traffic to and from Schiphol.

"Our snow crews are working around the clock to keep the runways clear, and aircraft are being carefully de-iced to ensure everyone can travel safely.

However, the wintry conditions are expected to cause disruptions to the flight schedule in the coming days. This may result in delays and cancellations.", said the airport's announcement.

Moreover, the Netherlands does not currently have any train traffic available, a problem expected to persist until at least 10.00 AM (GMT+1).

If you plan to fly via Schiphol, the airport advises to stay up-to-date with the current flight information prior to reaching the airport and get in touch with your airline.

"If your flight has been cancelled, please do not come to the airport.", management added.
