Restless night over the Mediterranean Sea, in the area west of Crete, the southernmost of the Greek islands.

Two earthquakes were recorded early this morning, both with a magnitude of 4.8The epicenter was located in the sea, in the western region of Crete, near the island of Kythira. The first tremor was felt at 1:50 (GMT) in the morning, and the next at 2:25 (GMT), that is, a little more than half an hour apart. The depth of both tremors was about 10 kilometers below sea level.

Despite its proximity to the small island of Kythira, no injuries or damage were reported there or in Crete, an area known for relatively few earthquakes because of its location at the junction of tectonic plates. However, according to a few reports in the Greek media, the quake was felt in Crete.

Recently, Cyprus was also struck by a series of earthquakes.
