Conditions have improved at Toronto Pearson Airport after more than 20cm of snow fell during a "significant winter storm hitting parts of Ontario and Québec", impacting airline operations, as Air Canada has informed yesterday.
"Please check your flight's status before going to the airport via the Air Canada app or at http://aircanada.com.", the airline urged its passengers.
In a statement issued by the airport, surface maintenance teams were working continuously in the field, using a fleet of advanced snow removal vehicles, and making repeated rounds throughout the airports to keep runways, taxiways, and parking lots clean and safe for operations.
"Our crews continue to make loops of the airfield to remove snow from runways, taxiways, and aprons so aircraft can safely arrive and depart. Passengers are advised to check their flight status before coming to the airport, as some arriving and departing flights continue to be impacted.", informed the airport on social network X.
The Greater Toronto Airports Authority emphasized that operations are ongoing around the clock, and that the airport continues to monitor weather conditions and adjust its preparations according to developments.
Pearson Airport also issued updates regarding delayed passenger flow through security screening checkpoints.
"There are longer than usual wait times at some security screening checkpoints. Passengers are encouraged to arrive early and be prepared. We appreciate your patience as we work to screen passengers as quickly as possible."
The situation has since returned to normal. At around 9:30 pm Canada time (4:30 am GMT), management announced: "Passenger flow through security screening checkpoints is now moving well. Thank you for your patience."
The stormy and unpredictable weather led to widespread disruptions in flight traffic across Europe last week. Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed, while major airports issued warnings and instructions to passengers in light of the weather conditions.
