Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing have announced a new order for nine 787-0 Dreamliners, in preparation for the airline's growing demand for long-haul flights. The new aircraft will help the airline boost its international network, which currently includes 145 destinations.
The current order joins the airline’s previous commitment to purchase 11 737 MAX aircraft, announced at the Dubai Airshow. Both deals are set to close in December 2025 and add 20 more fuel-efficient Boeing aircraft to Ethiopian Airlines’ order backlog.
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates the largest Dreamliner fleet in Africa, with 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft operating on intercontinental routes from Addis Ababa to key destinations in Europe, Asia and North America, as well as on intra-African routes. The Dreamliner aircraft offer approximately 25% fuel savings and emissions compared to previous models, while combining passenger and cargo transport on high-demand trade routes.
Since entering service in 2011, the Dreamliner has helped open more than 520 new direct routes between previously unconnected cities, and has carried over a billion passengers worldwide.
Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines: "We are pleased to announce that Ethiopian Airlines has reached a deal with Boeing to place a firm order for 31 ultra-modern airplanes, with opportunity for 36 additional jets," said Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew. "This order will enable us to modernize and increase our fleet in support of Ethiopian Airlines' growth plan and our Vision 2035 Strategy. Through this deal, we have solidified our decades-old exemplary business partnership with Boeing. The 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX demonstrate Ethiopian Airlines' environmentally conscious decisions and its commitment to serve passengers with the latest technologically advanced airplanes."
Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing vice president of commercial sales and marketing in Africa: “The 787 Dreamliner family has proven to be a game-changer for airlines around the world, and we are proud to support Ethiopian Airlines in their mission to connect Africa with the global community. Together, we look forward to shaping the future of air travel with advanced, efficient and comfortable airplanes to serve their passengers.”
