Travel Chaos: Frankfurt Faces 48-Hour Shutdown of Subways and Trams Starting This Friday

Residents of Frankfurt am Main are expected to face significant disruptions this weekend: a fourth warning strike as part of wage negotiations in Hesse's public transport has been announced for Friday and Saturday, February 27 and 28, 2026.

During these 48 hours, all nine subway (U-Bahn) lines and ten tram lines operated by the Frankfurt Transport Authority (VGF) are expected to be out of service.

Alongside the Rhine-Main S-Bahn and the tram network, the subway is the backbone of the city's public transport system, so the new strike will cause widespread disruptions to passenger traffic.

Urban transport company traffiQ warns that demand for alternatives will increase significantly, especially on bus routes, which could lead to congestion and delays.

Which Lines Will Operate?

Despite the strike, several services are expected to continue operating:

✔️ S-Bahn lines

✔️ Regional trains

✔️ City and regional bus lines, including express buses

✔️ Alternative service for the U2 line between Nieder-Asbach and Gunzenheim

Authorities recommend checking the latest information near departure time.
