Tomorrow, Saturday, February 28, 2026, Greece will mark three years since the major train disaster of 2023 in Tempe, in which 57 people died.
As we announced this week, the Hellenic Train is expected to be closed on this day, but the metro and light rail will operate as usual. However, this is not the only important announcement for tourists in Greece.
Starting at 12:00 noon tomorrow, a huge demonstration is expected to take place in Syntagma Square in central Athens to mark 3 years since the disaster and the allegations of a cover-up that followed. In the past, these demonstrations have turned violent and difficult, and even extremist elements who joined the demonstrations have turned the tide, the police have intervened, and the events have ended with protesters injured and arrested.
Tourists in Athens are advised to avoid reaching Syntagma Square and the parliament area as much as possible before the demonstrations begin, which, as mentioned, will begin at 12:00 noon and end in the evening.
