The Greek island of Karpathos is usually a less known destination for most tourists worldwide. Located right in the middle between Rhodes and Crete, it is a perfect destination for those looking for an authentic vacation, away from the crowds and busy islands.
Unlike more touristy islands, here you'll still find traditional villages, pristine nature, and beaches that look like they've come straight out of a postcard, minus the crowds and noise. Here are a few things you shouldn't miss on the hidden island.
Fairytale Beaches and Instagrammable Churches
Among the steep mountain views and azure beaches, you will find Apella Beach, considered one of the most beautiful in all of Greece due to its exceptionally clear waters. Another beach you simply cannot miss is Kyra Panagia, where you will find a dreamy bay and a small church with a red dome, a perfect Instagram location.

The village of Olympos, located in the north of the island, is Greece of the past, in every sense of the word. The locals still wear traditional clothes, and life goes on at its own pace. The alleys and stone houses will make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time.
Karpathos, like Crete, was already inhabited in the Minoan period, and was ruled by the Romans, Byzantines, and Italians, with each period leaving its mark, in architecture, cuisine, and tradition.

If you are a surfer, know that Karpathos is a highly recommended destination for this as well. Prasonisi Beach is an excellent surfing beach due to the strong winds. If you are a little less adventurous, you can go on a cruise around the entire island. It takes a good few hours, but you will reach hidden and secluded corners, which also contain a lot of romance. By the way, you can also find beautiful hiking trails between mountains and hidden villages here, as well as professional diving and snorkeling for enthusiasts.
Where to Sleep?
In recent years, there has been an impressive development of accommodation options in Karpathos. Alongside family hotels of various levels of tourism, a number of luxury hotels have been established (and priced accordingly) that are particularly suitable, as mentioned, for those looking for a quiet vacation away from the crowds, even in the hot season.
