Lufthansa Group and Munich Airport are are moving forward wth their long-standing partnership, agreeing to continue their joint venture through 2056, including a major expansion of Terminal 2 with a new eastward pier, the “T-Pier.” The project aims to support future air traffic growth, particularly by expanding Munich’s long-haul fleet.
T-Pier to Open in 2035
The T-Pier is expected to open in 2035, adding capacity for 10 million additional passengers each year. According to the agreement, both companies will move into detailed planning, ensuring the continuation of their successful collaboration. Beyond increasing capacity, the expansion is expected to create new jobs, strengthen the regional economy, and solidify Munich’s position as a key European hub.
Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa, highlighted the strategic importance of the project: "Trust-based, long-term partnerships are a key factor in our success as a leading global airline group. In Munich, this is particularly evident in the fact that, together with FMG and its shareholders, we have created a high-performance hub that has been among the world’s top airports for many years. With premium quality, reliability, and customer focus, Munich has become a central pillar of our hub network."
He noted that the expansion is more than an infrastructure investment, reinforcing Bavaria as a gateway to the world, ensuring Germany’s competitiveness in global aviation, and maintaining state-of-the-art connectivity despite current geopolitical challenges. Lufthansa will also continue to invest in its Frankfurt hub, maintaining the company’s role in linking Germany and Europe to the world.
Photo: Lufthansa Group Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder praised the partnership and the planned growth: "Bavaria is a hub for aviation, and Munich Airport is our gateway to the world. Since 2003, the airport and Lufthansa have maintained a globally unique and successful partnership on a global scale. This is a landmark deal and a milestone for the aviation hub. "
Söder confirmed government support for aviation, including potential reductions in air traffic taxes, and highlighted the airport’s capacity to accommodate millions of additional passengers.
The Lufthansa-Munich Airport partnership has been in place since the 1990s and became unique with the opening of Terminal 2 in 2003.
Along with its satellite buildings, Terminal 2 has consistently reached capacity limits, further proving the airport’s success. The terminal serves exclusively Lufthansa Group airlines and partners, offering passengers short distances, quick transfers, and modern facilities. In 2025, Terminal 2 handled over 32 million passengers. Munich Airport holds a 60% stake in the Terminal 2 operating company, while Lufthansa Group holds 40%.
Alongside Munich, Lufthansa is continuing development at Frankfurt, Germany’s largest hub. Investments include Terminal 1 improvements, a new cargo handling center, and the recently launched “Campus North” project to optimize operations and enhance the passenger experience.
