Suspended Prison Sentence and Fine of Over €10,000: Punishment for Ryanair Passengers Who Rioted and Caused an Emergency Landing

Ryanair announced today (Thursday, May 7, 2026) that the Toulouse Criminal Court convicted two passengers who rioted on flight FR9251 from London Stansted to Ibiza on May 17, 2025. Following the incident, the plane was forced to deviate from its route and land in Toulouse.

The company notes that the two behaved offensively towards other passengers and did not obey the crew's instructions, behavior that affected approximately 184 passengers and six crew members.

The court sentenced the two to suspended prison sentences of up to 10 months and a cumulative fine of more than 10,000 euros.

Ryanair noted that the company continues to operate a "zero tolerance" policy towards disruptive passengers, with the aim of ensuring a safe and pleasant flying environment for passengers and crew.

We welcome this decision by the Toulouse Criminal Court to convict these two disruptive passengers and sentence them with up to 10 months jail time and to pay a penalty of over €10,000.," said Jade Kirwan, Ryanair’s head of communications, adding: "It is unacceptable that passengers, many of whom are heading away with family or friends to enjoy a relaxing summer holiday, suffer unnecessary disruption and reduced holiday time as a result of unruly passenger behaviour. Yet this was regrettably the case for passengers on this flight from Stansted to Ibiza in May last year, which was forced to divert to Toulouse as a result of two passengers’ disruptive behavior."

Kirwan concluded: "This conviction demonstrates just one of the many consequences that passengers who disrupt flights will face as part of Ryanair’s zero tolerance policy, and we hope this action will deter further disruptive behavior on flights so that passengers and crew can travel in a comfortable and respectful environment.”

Last month, the airline also welcomed the Bristol Crown Court’s conviction of another unruly passenger "whose inexcusable behavior disrupted a flight from Krakow to Bristol in November 2025."
