Access road A201 to Brussels Airport was temporarily closed on Tuesday (May 12, 2026) after a gas leak occurred during nearby road works, disrupting vehicle access to Belgium’s busiest airport.
Airport authorities confirmed that passengers could currently reach the airport only by train while emergency crews were working at the scene and assessing the situation.
Despite the road disruption, rail services to the airport remained fully operational, with officials encouraging travelers to use the airport’s railway station located directly beneath the terminal building on level -1.
Situation Resolved
Update: "Due to a gas leak during road works, the access road A201 was temporarily closed by the police.
This may have caused inconvenience for passengers and visitors trying to reach the airport.
The situation is now resolved, and Brussels Airport is accessible by car again. Thank you for your understanding."
Massive Interruptions at the City's Two Airports Due to Strike
To add more fuel to the fire, passengers who were supposed to fly today were also forced to deal with severe nationwide disruptions amid the announced strike that affected many flights at Brussels Airport (BRU/EBBR), where flights were expected to be canceled, while all flights were canceled at Charleroi Airport (CRL/EBCI).
Public transport, including trains, buses, and metros, was also heavily impacted by the strike and a protesting march.
