Saudia Airlines has today, May 25, 2026, marked a significant achievement by becoming the first operator in the Middle East and Africa of the Airbus A321XLR aircraft. This is the first aircraft out of an order of 15 of this model, which constitutes a key pillar of the company's fleet modernization program.
The A321XLR, short for "Extra Long Range," is an industry pioneer thanks to its ability to fly distances of up to 4,700 nautical miles (about 8,700 km), a distance that previously required large and expensive wide-body aircraft to operate. For Saudia, the aircraft enables the opening of new and far-flung international destinations while maintaining high economic efficiency.
The Experience of Flying a Large Aircraft in a Small Body
Despite being a single-aisle aircraft, the company chose a luxurious configuration to ensure maximum comfort: Business Class with 24 flat-bed seats and direct aisle access for every passenger; Economy Class with 120 comfortable, well-designed seats.
The aircraft is equipped with extra-large overhead storage compartments, advanced lighting systems, and best-in-class noise insulation.
A Step Towards Sustainability and Vision 2030
In addition to the operational benefits, the aircraft is equipped with CFM LEAP-1A engines, which offer a 30% fuel saving per seat compared to the previous generation. The move supports Saudi Arabia’s goal of attracting over 150 million visitors per year by the end of the decade, as part of its “Vision 2030” plan.
The partnership between Airbus and Saudi Arabia, which began over 40 years ago, is now taking things to a new level. Capable of operating on a 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blend, the new aircraft not only shortens distances, but also does so with a reduced carbon footprint, on the way to the industry’s goal of 100% SAF by 2030.
