As announced at the start of the month, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced major airspace security measures for the FIFA World Cup 2026 including temporary flight restrictions that will be enforced across the United States during the event in an effort to strengthen airspace security around matches and fan events.
"Stronger Drone-Enforcement Efforts"
The restrictions, coordinated with the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice, will apply to stadiums hosting World Cup matches as well as selected fan gathering locations in multiple cities.
Under the plan, all aircraft operations, including drones, will be prohibited within a three nautical mile radius and up to 3,000 feet above ground level around match venues on game days unless specifically authorized by air traffic control.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said authorities are preparing for increased drone activity during the tournament as millions of fans travel across the country.
“As fans from around the world gather at stadiums and fan events across the country for the FIFA World Cup, the FAA is using every available tool to protect the airspace, including stronger drone-enforcement efforts,” Bedford said.
“Drone operators should expect swift action if they violate restricted airspace.”
The restrictions will affect major stadiums including SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and AT&T Stadium in Texas.
Additional drone restrictions will also apply around fan event locations such as Rockefeller Center in New York, Bayfront Park in Miami, Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, and Dallas Fair Park.
Officials warned that unauthorized drone operators could face fines of up to $100,000, confiscation of equipment, and possible federal criminal charges.
The DETER Initiative Will Identify Violations
The FAA also confirmed that its newly launched Drone Expedited and Targeted Enforcement Response initiative, known as DETER, will be deployed during the tournament to accelerate enforcement actions and identify violations more quickly.
Authorities said restrictions may also extend to team hotels, training sites, and other sensitive locations linked to the tournament.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be hosted across multiple cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the US expected to host the majority of matches.
Canada, the United States, and Mexico have also recently announced harmonized Ebola screening measures to protect travelers and fans during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
