A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 6.1 struck off the northwestern coast of Calabria in southern Italy shortly after midnight on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, according to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
The earthquake occurred at 00:12:35 local time (22:12:35 UTC on June 1) and was centered offshore near the province of Cosenza. Seismologists recorded the event at a depth of approximately 250 kilometers, making it a deep-focus earthquake.
INGV reported that the epicenter was located about 41 kilometers west of Cosenza, 48 kilometers west of Lamezia Terme, and 72 kilometers west of Catanzaro.
Following the earthquake, Italy's Civil Protection Department activated its monitoring procedures. At 1:00 a.m., Department Head Fabio Ciciliano convened the Crisis Unit with representatives from southern Italian regions, the National Fire Brigade and INGV to assess the situation.
In an update issued at 1:30 a.m., the Civil Protection Department said no region had reported injuries or damage to property. Authorities nevertheless continued precautionary checks across the affected areas while monitoring for any developments.
