Newark Liberty International Airport records a significant achievement in 2026, as the best among all major airports in the northeastern United States, in the rate of flights taking off and landing on time.

This is an impressive turnaround for the airport, which only about a year ago faced one of the most challenging operational crises in its history.

In the spring of 2025, Newark was affected by a combination of factors that disrupted its operations: malfunctions in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) radar and communications systems, a shortage of air traffic controllers, and runway infrastructure work. This combination led to lengthy delays, flight cancellations, and widespread disruptions that affected millions of passengers.

Since then, a series of steps have been taken to improve the situation. The US Department of Transportation and the FAA have strengthened the workforce, upgraded key technological systems, and adjusted the volume of flights to the actual capacity of the airport. These steps have made it possible to stabilize operations and significantly improve the level of service.

Today, Newark serves as one of the most important international gateways to the New York region, with connectivity to hundreds of destinations throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and India. The airport continues to expand its international destination offering and solidify its position as a strategic aviation hub for both business and leisure travelers.

The 2026 data indicate that the efforts made over the past year are bearing fruit, placing Newark as a prominent example of how investment in infrastructure, personnel, and operational planning can transform an airport that has suffered significant difficulties into one of the most efficient and punctual in the United States.
