With the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup just days away, airlines across North America are preparing for a massive influx of football fans as new data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows rising demand for flights to host cities.

The tournament, which kicks off in Mexico City and concludes at MetLife Stadium in the New York metropolitan area, will be the largest World Cup ever staged. Hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the competition will feature 48 teams and 104 matches spread across 16 cities over 39 days.

According to IATA, flight bookings to World Cup host cities are already higher than they were during the same June-July travel period in 2025, signaling strong demand from international and domestic travelers heading to the tournament.

Unlike previous World Cups held in a single country, the 2026 edition will generate significant cross-border travel as supporters move between host cities in three nations. Fans following their teams throughout the competition are expected to drive both domestic and international air traffic across North America.

To help streamline travel, FIFA and U.S. authorities have introduced the FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System (FIFA PASS), which gives ticket holders access to priority visa interview appointments. The United States has also deployed an additional 500 consular officers to help process the surge in visa applications ahead of kickoff.

IATA said nearly every host city is experiencing increased booking activity, with the strongest growth concentrated in major international gateways that are attracting visitors from around the world. More established tourism destinations are also benefiting, though increases there are generally more modest due to already strong baseline demand.

Some Mexican host cities are currently seeing softer demand, likely because they rely more on regional travelers who tend to book later. Mexico is also hosting the group stage and early knockout rounds, which may be influencing booking patterns.
