Low-cost carrier Wizz Air has publicly called on Serbian authorities to reverse what it describes as measures designed to unlawfully force the airline out of Belgrade, warning that competition and consumer choice are at risk.

In a strongly worded statement, the airline urged the government to "protect competition, protect connectivity, and protect consumer choice," while calling on officials to uphold their international obligations.

Wizz Air argued that the future of affordable air travel in Serbia should be determined by passengers rather than what it described as government intervention aimed at protecting state-backed airlines from competition.

The carrier highlighted its long-standing presence in the Serbian market, noting that more than 14 million passengers have traveled with Wizz Air to and from Serbia since launching operations there in 2010.

The airline did not provide additional details about the specific measures it believes are affecting its operations. However, its statement suggests growing tensions over competition in Serbia's aviation sector, where low-cost carriers have played an important role in expanding connectivity and providing lower fares for travelers.

Wizz Air has been one of the largest budget airlines serving Serbia over the past decade, offering connections between Belgrade and numerous destinations across Europe. The airline's warning raises questions about the future competitive landscape of the country's aviation market and the potential impact on passengers if capacity or route options are reduced.

The dispute also comes at a time when airlines across Europe are increasingly scrutinizing airport policies, market access rules, and government support measures that could influence competition between carriers.

For now, Wizz Air says it remains committed to the Serbian market but is calling for authorities to ensure a level playing field that allows passengers to benefit from competitive fares and greater travel choice.
