Travelers looking to visit Greece this summer are warned that the country faces a high risk of wildfires throughout the season and that they should take extra precautions.

40 Fires in 24 Hours

The Greek Fire Service said that 40 forest and agricultural fires broke out across the country between 6:00 p.m. on June 30 and 6:00 p.m. on July 1.

According to the service, 33 of the fires were brought under control quickly while they were still in their initial stages, while firefighters continue to battle seven active blazes.

Two fires that broke out in low vegetation near Koufalia in Thessaloniki prompted a major response involving 30 firefighters, a hiking team from the 2nd EMODE unit, volunteers, 11 fire engines, two firefighting aircraft, and one helicopter. Water tankers from the Central Macedonia Region also assisted in the operation.

A few hours later, the Fire Service confirmed that both fires in Koufalia had been brought under control.

Other wildfires broke out in the northern part of Halkidiki, on the island of Salamina, next to Athens, and a third one in southern Greece.

Stay Vigilant

The Fire Service continues to urge the public to remain vigilant as Greece faces an elevated wildfire risk during the summer season.

The Fire Service said that local investigation offices, together with units from the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (DAEE), are investigating the causes of the fires.

Authorities also urged the public to remain vigilant and reminded residents that, in the event of a wildfire, they should follow all instructions issued by the competent authorities for their safety.

The danger of wildfires remains elevated from April to October, with authorities advising tourists to stay informed and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

Travelers are encouraged to register their mobile phones to receive Greece's emergency alert notifications. These alerts can provide critical information if a wildfire breaks out near their location and help them respond quickly to evacuation orders or other emergency instructions.

What You Need to Know About Wildfires

Wildfires can spread rapidly and unpredictably, making it essential to follow updates from local authorities and emergency services.

Visitors should avoid activities that could accidentally spark a fire. The guidance advises against leaving litter behind, particularly glass bottles or other reflective objects that can ignite dry vegetation. Travelers should ensure cigarettes are completely extinguished and should not light barbecues in areas where they could pose a fire risk.

Greek authorities treat wildfire prevention seriously. Under Greek law, causing a wildfire or forest fire is a criminal offence, even if it happens unintentionally.

Travelers should contact their airline or travel operator if wildfires disrupt transport or affect return journeys.
