Millions of Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day, triggering the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to brace for over 52,000 flights on July 2 alone during what is expected to be the busiest 4th of July travel period in the last 15 years.
Officials across the United States are reminding the public that this year's festivities come with stricter safety measures in several parts of the country, particularly in wildfire-prone regions.
Accordingly, federal agencies continue to recommend only attending professionally organized fireworks displays rather than setting off consumer fireworks at home, while state and local governments have introduced additional restrictions in response to drought, extreme heat, and fire danger.

Officials are reminding consumers to buy only legal fireworks, keep children away from sparklers, have water nearby and never relight malfunctioning fireworks. The agency also stresses that fireworks must be legal where they are used, as regulations vary by state and municipality.
In addition to federal guidance, several western states have adopted stricter measures this year because of heightened wildfire conditions. Utah has imposed a statewide ban on personal fireworks, while many counties and cities across Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington have introduced local restrictions or canceled displays due to fire risk. Some counties in Florida also have burn bans in place, including Charlotte County, DeSoto County, Manatee County, and Sarasota County. On July 1, 2026, Collier County lifted a burn ban that had been in effect since January.
As a reminder, at the end of June, Utah issued its first-ever Particularly Dangerous Situation Red Flag Warning amid strong winds and dry conditions increasing the risk of wildfires. A few days earlier, the FAA issued a temporary flight restriction over an area southeast of Coeur d'Alene in Idaho to support firefighters' wildfire suppression operations.
Officials are encouraging residents to attend professional shows or choose alternative celebrations, including drone light displays.
Authorities are also warning visitors to expect enhanced security at many major events. In Washington, D.C., the National Park Service is hosting the official Independence Day fireworks on the National Mall as part of the nationwide America 250 celebrations, with security screenings, road closures and designated viewing areas in place.

The National Mall remains the nation's flagship Fourth of July destination. The National Park Service's fireworks display is launched near the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, with viewing available from the National Mall and surrounding memorials.
While standard July 4 fireworks displays here last exactly 17 minutes every year, with approximately 17,000 to 20,000 shells fired into the sky, President Donald Trump has hinted that this year's special 250th anniversary will see a "the largest fireworks show in history" aimed at breaking records.
Freedom250, the White House task force responsible for organizing the celebrations, Freedom250, has proposed a 40-minute fireworks show with over 850,000 pyrotechnic effects, which could set a world record.
The show will create an immersive experience with hundreds of thousands of fireworks launched from 10 locations across the National Mall and West Potomac Park, including eight barges in the Potomac River.
Make sure to arrive early to go through security screening.

Officials emphasize that, regardless of where Americans celebrate, the safest option remains attending professionally managed fireworks displays. According to the CPSC, fireworks continue to cause thousands of injuries each year, with sparklers alone reaching temperatures of around 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to cause severe burns within seconds.
