Portugal has declared a nationwide state of alert across mainland Portugal from July 3 to July 6, 2026, as authorities brace for an elevated risk of devastating forest fires caused by extreme weather conditions.

The alert comes as soaring temperatures, dry conditions, and strong winds significantly increase the likelihood of rural wildfires across much of the country. The Portuguese government has introduced a series of emergency measures aimed at reducing fire risks and strengthening response capabilities.

Several foreign governments have also updated their travel advice, warning citizens who are visiting, transiting through, or planning to travel to Portugal about the heightened wildfire danger. Travelers are advised to stay informed by regularly checking updates issued by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).

The state of alert took effect at 12:00 a.m. on Friday, July 3, and will remain in force until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, July 6. It follows forecasts from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which predict a significant deterioration in wildfire conditions across large parts of mainland Portugal.

Strict Restrictions Introduced

As part of the emergency declaration, Portuguese authorities have imposed several temporary restrictions designed to prevent new fires from starting.

Access, movement, and staying inside designated forest areas and many forest and rural roads have been prohibited. Authorities have also banned agricultural burning and the burning of vegetation debris, while previously issued permits for such activities have been suspended.

The use of machinery in forest areas has also been prohibited, except for equipment directly involved in firefighting operations. In other rural areas, machinery such as brush cutters with metal blades, mulchers, and heavy equipment fitted with front blades has also been temporarily banned.

Emergency Services on High Alert

The government has significantly increased the readiness of emergency services during the alert period.

The National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP) have strengthened patrols, surveillance, and enforcement operations, with additional personnel deployed to monitor high-risk areas. Some officers may have leave canceled or rest periods suspended to ensure adequate staffing.

Medical emergency teams, public health services, and social support services have also been placed on higher readiness, while forest firefighting crews, forest rangers, and nature wardens will remain fully mobilized throughout the alert.

Military aircraft will be available to support firefighting operations if requested by the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection. The Armed Forces will also assist the GNR with aerial surveillance in districts facing very high or maximum wildfire danger.

Meanwhile, telecommunications providers and energy companies have been instructed to increase operational readiness to respond quickly to any wildfire-related disruptions.

Authorities said ANEPC will continue issuing public warnings and safety advice throughout the alert period, urging residents and visitors alike to avoid activities that could spark fires and to follow any evacuation or emergency instructions if conditions worsen.

Earlier this week, Greece urged travelers to stay alert after firefighters responded to 40 wildfires in just 24 hours. Across the ocean,

It's not only Europe that is dealing with wildfires. US officials have also reminded the public that this year's Independence Day festivities come with stricter safety measures in several parts of the country, particularly in wildfire-prone regions.
