Photo: Alekk Pires / Shutterstock.com Spain's airport operator Aena has announced a series of major investments across three airports, advancing expansion, modernization, and sustainability projects at Madrid, Barcelona, and Almería as passenger traffic across the country continues to grow.
The largest investment targets Madrid's Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, where Aena has launched a tender worth more than €146 million for new works at Terminal 4 (T4) and its satellite terminal (T4S).
The project includes the expansion of the North Apron at T4 and the South Pier at T4S, adding three new contact stands designed to accommodate additional aircraft and support future traffic growth at Spain's busiest airport. The upgrades form part of Madrid-Barajas' broader long-term development strategy as it strengthens its role as one of Europe's leading aviation hubs.
Barcelona Airport. Photo: SHUTTERSTOCKMeanwhile, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport has introduced changes aimed at improving access and reducing congestion around Terminal 1. Aena announced the reorganization of the T1 Express Parking area, creating two dedicated zones along the departures roadway.
One section will be reserved for quick passenger drop-offs and pick-ups without leaving the vehicle, while another will offer short-term parking for up to two hours. According to Aena, the changes are expected to improve traffic flow, speed up passenger movements, and enhance safety around one of Spain's busiest terminals during the peak summer travel season.
Further south, Almería Airport is moving ahead with one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects in recent years. Aena has put out to tender a €29.25 million runway regeneration project that will completely renew the runway pavement and replace the airport's lighting system with energy-efficient LED technology.
The project also has a significant environmental component. The works are being designed under the internationally recognized BREEAM sustainability framework, with the goal of making Almería Airport's runway the first in the European Union to receive certification under the standard.
