Miami International Airport. Photo: Shutterstock The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced a major $870 million investment to modernize airport infrastructure across the country, funding projects designed to improve safety, expand capacity, and enhance the passenger experience.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will distribute 339 Airport Infrastructure Grants to airports in 44 states and two U.S. territories through the Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) program.
Among the largest awards is $289 million for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to construct a new terminal access road aimed at improving traffic flow and passenger access.
Miami International Airport will receive $50 million to reconstruct its terminal roof, while Akron-Canton Airport in Ohio has been awarded $9.1 million to rehabilitate passenger boarding bridges and rebuild key airport facilities.
Other notable projects include $4.2 million for Juneau International Airport in Alaska to replace snow removal equipment, $3.7 million for Charleston International Airport in South Carolina to support terminal expansion, and $3.5 million for Sugar Land Regional Airport in Texas to reconstruct a runway.
Secretary Duffy said the investments will help create a more efficient and seamless travel experience while strengthening critical aviation infrastructure.
"From our regional hubs to some of America's busiest airports, we are investing in critical infrastructure that will provide American families with a more seamless, efficient travel experience for years to come," Duffy said. "Upgrading our runway infrastructure is part of our work to usher in the Golden Age of Transportation."
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency is moving quickly to distribute funding as passenger demand continues to grow. "We're making airports safer and more convenient for travelers across the U.S. We're releasing grants at record speed to ensure we keep up with the growing demand for travel."
The Airport Infrastructure Grants program supports a broad range of projects, including airport planning, terminal improvements, baggage system upgrades, runway and taxiway rehabilitation, roadway access improvements, and other safety-related infrastructure.
