Bucharest Airport. Photo: Shutterstock Romania's busiest airport is moving forward with a major renewable energy investment after the National Airports Company of Bucharest (CNAB) signed the contract for the design and construction of a large photovoltaic park at Henri Coandă International Airport.
The project, scheduled for completion by December 2027, will significantly increase the airport's energy independence while supporting Romania's broader sustainability goals.
Under the agreement, a 12.6 MWp photovoltaic power plant will be built near the airport, together with a 17.88 MWh battery energy storage system. The new installation will be connected directly to the airport's existing 20 kV power network, allowing renewable electricity generated on site to power airport operations.
The investment represents the first phase of a much larger renewable energy project planned for Henri Coandă Airport. Once fully completed, the solar park is expected to reach a total installed capacity of 31.5 MWp, supported by a 30 MWh energy storage system.
According to CNAB, the initiative is designed to reduce electricity costs, improve the airport's energy security, and lower carbon emissions by increasing the use of renewable energy sources. The company also said the project supports both Romania's national climate objectives and the European Union's energy transition targets.
The airport operator secured 132 million RON ($29 million) in non-reimbursable funding through the Modernisation Fund, under the program supporting new renewable electricity production and energy storage systems for aerodromes. The funding scheme is managed by Romania's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
The total value of the contract for design, technical assistance, and construction amounts to 134 million lei ($29 million), excluding VAT.
The project forms part of a wider effort to modernize Romania's largest airport, which has been investing in infrastructure improvements and sustainable technologies to meet growing passenger demand while reducing its environmental footprint.
