Major Milestone: Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Completes Cargo Flight Trial

The FAA and Utah completed a hybrid-electric cargo flight demonstration, advancing efforts to integrate next-generation aircraft into U.S. airspace

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has completed another milestone in the development of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), supporting a hybrid-electric demonstration flight designed to test the future of regional cargo transportation.

The demonstration was carried out by Ampaire Inc. in partnership with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), with the aircraft flying along Utah's I-15 corridor between Salt Lake City International Airport and Cedar City Regional Airport.

The flight marks the second major demonstration under the FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), a nationwide initiative aimed at safely integrating next-generation aircraft into the U.S. National Airspace System.

FAA Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau:"This demonstration will provide valuable operational experience and help us understand how to safely integrate Advanced Air Mobility into the National Airspace System."

Utah officials say the project is part of the state's long-term strategy to prepare transportation infrastructure for emerging aviation technologies.

"Our responsibility is to prepare Utah's transportation system for the future, and today's demonstration shows this future is already taking flight," said UDOT Commissioner Carlos Braceras. Through Utah's uFLY initiative, government agencies, researchers and private industry are collecting operational data to help the FAA evaluate advanced aircraft that could improve regional connectivity, expand economic opportunities and increase mobility.

The eIPP was established under President Donald Trump's Unleashing American Drone Dominance Executive Order and serves as one of the country's largest real-world testing environments for advanced air mobility technologies, including electric and hybrid-electric aircraft.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Transportation selected eight projects across 26 states to participate in the program, with Utah becoming one of the inaugural participants.

The FAA says data collected during these flights will help identify regulatory gaps, refine operational procedures and support the safe introduction of advanced aircraft into everyday airspace.

Additional demonstration flights by the Utah Department of Transportation and other eIPP participants are scheduled throughout the remainder of 2026 as the United States continues preparing for the next generation of aviation.
