The latest warning covers the North, lower Northeast, Central region including Bangkok and surrounding areas, the East and South. The weather department is also warning of accumulated rainfall that could lead to flash floods and overflows, particularly around waterways, foothills and low-lying areas.
The warning comes as an active low-pressure system moves across the region while the southwest monsoon strengthens over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf.
The combination is expected to bring widespread rain, with some areas facing very heavy downpours.
Bangkok and the surrounding metropolitan area are among the areas being monitored. The department's seven-day forecast says Bangkok could experience fairly widespread thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain, with very heavy rain possible between September 24 and 26.
The South is also expected to see unsettled conditions. On the eastern coast, isolated very heavy rain is forecast during September 25 and 26, while parts of the western coast can also expect heavy rainfall through September 27.
Authorities are advising residents to follow weather updates and take care around areas vulnerable to flooding and runoff. The department is also warning vessels to exercise caution, with stronger winds and rougher seas expected in parts of the Andaman Sea and Gulf.
For travelers, the main concern is likely to be localized flooding and disruption on roads in areas receiving the heaviest rainfall. The weather can change quickly during periods of intense thunderstorms, so travelers heading between regions are advised to check local conditions before setting out.
The Thai Meteorological Department's latest warning is in effect through September 27, with further updates expected as the low-pressure system and monsoon conditions develop.
