Cluj Airport and city view. Photo: Shutterstock Cluj International Airport has completed an energy audit that will be used to assess future investments aimed at cutting energy consumption, operating costs and emissions across its infrastructure.
The “Avram Iancu” International Airport Cluj RA completed the reception of the audit services on September 10, 2026. The results were presented during a meeting attended by airport specialists, decision-makers and representatives of institutions operating at the airport, and shared with the public on Monday, September 28.
The project produced two main technical documents: an Energy Audit Report covering the airport’s complex energy balance and a separate report outlining a project for accessing non-reimbursable funding.
The audit examined energy use across the airport and evaluated potential measures to improve efficiency. According to the airport, the analysis covers both electrical and thermal energy processes and will help prioritize future projects.
Potential measures include reducing electricity and heating consumption, developing local energy production capacity and lowering the environmental impact of airport operations.
David Ciceo, General Manager of Cluj International Airport, said the completed audit provides a technical basis for deciding which investments should be prioritized.
“The completion of the energy audit provides us with a solid technical basis for prioritizing future investments and for implementing solutions that reduce both consumption and operational costs, as well as the impact on the environment,” Ciceo said.
He added that the work complements Cluj Airport’s activities under the European OLGA project and supports its commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
Cluj Airport is also a partner in OLGA, a European research and innovation project focused on greener airport operations.
The project includes measures designed to improve the energy performance of airport terminals and ground infrastructure, while examining the energy savings that can result from new technologies and more efficient systems.
Other areas covered by OLGA include renewable energy, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources and developing lower-emission transport solutions.
The airport’s project team coordinated the integration of results from OLGA into the energy audit, with the aim of identifying measures that could potentially be implemented over the short, medium and long term.
