Air Europa. Photo: Michael Derrer Fuchs / Shutterstock.com Air Europa is taking part in The Aviation Challenge 2026, a sustainability initiative led by SkyTeam that brings airlines together to test and assess measures aimed at reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency.
For this year's fifth edition, the Spanish airline is using two flights on different parts of its network to test a range of measures covering fuel use, waste management, cabin materials, ground operations and passenger engagement.
The first flight took place on September 22 between Madrid and Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. A second flight is scheduled for Friday, October 2, on the Madrid-Amsterdam route, operated by one of Air Europa's Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
For both flights, Air Europa has introduced measures designed to reduce fuel consumption and improve efficiency both in the air and on the ground.
The airline is using sustainable aviation fuel, while also optimizing flight routes and profiles and adjusting fuel loads. Pilots are using the OptiClimb tool to help reduce fuel consumption during the climb phase.
On the ground, Air Europa is using electric vehicles where possible. The airline is also removing certain single-use materials from its onboard operations.
Passengers are being given information about the environmental impact of their flight, including the option to see its estimated carbon footprint and make a voluntary contribution of an equivalent amount to certified climate projects.
Air Europa is also testing two initiatives focused on waste and the circular economy.
One is Waste360, a project designed to improve tracking of waste generated by flights, catering and maintenance. The system monitors waste flows at individual destinations to identify what is being produced, how it is handled and where changes could reduce environmental impact.
The airline is also working with AIRE Cabin Solutions on a project called "From Consumable to Rotable." Instead of automatically replacing certain cabin components, the initiative looks at repairing, refurbishing and reusing them so they can return to service while meeting required quality and safety standards.
Air Europa has added a social component to its participation in the challenge through a partnership with TETO Brazil, an organization that works with vulnerable communities on emergency housing and community development projects.
Passengers on the Madrid-Salvador de Bahia flight were invited to make voluntary donations during the journey. Air Europa will also promote the campaign throughout October, with the aim of supporting the construction of homes for vulnerable families in Salvador de Bahia.
The airline has introduced other measures during TAC 2026, including its "Light Luggage" initiative, which rewards passengers with lower checked baggage weights with status miles. Air Europa has also added an Operational Efficiency course to its regular pilot training program.
The Aviation Challenge is a global SkyTeam initiative focused on testing practical sustainability measures and sharing the results across the aviation industry.
