Sandy Cay Island. Photo: MSC MSC Group’s Cruise Division has officially broken ground on Sandy Cay, a new luxury private island destination in The Bahamas scheduled to open in 2028.
The ceremony marked the latest step in a project that is already under construction, with site work underway ahead of the planned opening. Representatives from MSC Group, the Bahamian government and project partners attended the event, including MSC Group Cruise Division Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago and Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis.

Located next to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Sandy Cay was first announced in April 2026. The island is being developed exclusively for guests sailing with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.
Unlike Ocean Cay, Sandy Cay is being positioned as a more intimate luxury retreat focused on wellness, relaxation and the surrounding natural environment. Plans include beaches, private retreats, dining venues and spaces designed for guests to unwind away from the busier areas of a traditional cruise destination.
The new island is intended to complement Ocean Cay rather than replace it, giving MSC guests two different private island experiences in the same area of The Bahamas.
MSC is also planning several upgrades at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. These will include additional dining options, new beach concepts for families and adults, larger relaxation areas and experiences linked to marine conservation.
The company said the two destinations are part of its wider strategy to create and develop private destinations while maintaining a focus on the natural environment and the character of The Bahamas.
