Passengers traveling to and from London Stansted Airport this weekend will face major rail disruption as essential maintenance work suspends direct train services on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18.

According to the official Stansted Express notice, there will be no direct trains to or from the airport on either day. Rail replacement buses will operate on parts of the route, while other journeys will require passengers to travel via Cambridge and central London.

The disruption is expected to extend journey times significantly. Passengers traveling between Stansted Airport and London Liverpool Street should allow approximately two hours, while journeys to or from Tottenham Hale are expected to take between two hours and 15 minutes and two hours and 40 minutes.

Passengers traveling to or from London Liverpool Street are advised to travel via Cambridge and King's Cross. The journey includes a train from Stansted Airport to Cambridge, a Great Northern service from Cambridge to King's Cross, and then the London Underground or National Rail to Liverpool Street.

For Tottenham Hale, travelers can travel via Cambridge South and King's Cross or take a rail replacement bus between Stansted Airport and Waltham Cross, then take a train to Tottenham Hale. The expected journey time is two hours and 15 minutes to two hours and 40 minutes.

Journeys between Stansted Airport and Stratford are expected to take between two hours and 15 minutes and two hours and 30 minutes. One option involves traveling via Cambridge and Farringdon before continuing to Stratford by London Underground or National Rail. Alternatively, passengers can take a replacement bus between the airport and Waltham Cross, then continue by train.

Tickets, Payments and Accessibility

Stansted Express tickets will continue to be accepted on the designated alternative routes during the disruption. However, contactless payment may not be available on all parts of the journey, including replacement bus services.

Passengers are advised to purchase their tickets before traveling to avoid a potential penalty fare and to check live departures for the latest service information and platform details.

Rail replacement buses will be clearly signed and staffed. Station staff will be available to assist passengers at stations and interchange points, and an accessible vehicle option will be provided. In some circumstances, this may be a taxi rather than a bus.

Check Before Heading to the Airport

The disruption affects both airport-bound and London-bound journeys, making it particularly important for passengers with flight departures, onward connections or other time-sensitive plans to allow extra time.

Travelers should review their route in advance and check for updates before setting off. The official Stansted Express service alteration notice contains the detailed alternative routes and journey times.
